Ranon was born into a household deeply devoted to Orthodox Judaism, where religious values shaped his upbringing. As the second of three children, he was raised in a suburban Detroit home where faith and learning were central to daily life. He attended an Orthodox Day School, immersed in Jewish teachings from an early age, gaining a solid foundation in scripture and religious traditions. His academic journey continued at a prominent yeshiva high school near Chicago, where he furthered his studies in Torah, philosophy, and Jewish law. Seeking a more immersive religious experience, he moved to Israel after high school to study at an Orthodox yeshiva, where he devoted himself to Talmudic studies, theology, and sacred texts. However, his time there led to deep personal reflection, sparking critical questions about faith and practice, ultimately leading him toward spiritual evolution.

As Teller progressed in his studies, he began to feel constrained by the rigid structures of Orthodox fundamentalism. Wanting to explore different avenues of thought, he returned to Chicago and discovered a passion for creative writing. He pursued a degree in television writing at Columbia College Chicago, where he honed his storytelling skills and developed a keen sense of narrative expression. This newfound passion led him to a career in television, where he worked as a writer and producer for a Sunday morning news program. Alongside his professional pursuits, he developed an interest in blues music, which became integral to his life. Learning to play guitar, he joined a rhythm and blues band and performed at iconic venues, including Chicago's historic Maxwell Street. Although his secular endeavors provided a creative outlet, he soon found himself drawn back to the spiritual and cultural depth of his Jewish roots.

In 1996, Rabbi Ranon Teller returned to Israel with a renewed sense of purpose, determined to explore Judaism in a way that extended beyond the confines of his Orthodox upbringing. He delved into alternative expressions of Jewish spirituality, immersing himself in contemporary Chasidic music and the teachings of a pioneering Jewish scholar. Through this exploration, he began to see faith as dynamic, capable of evolving with personal growth and modern perspectives. While in Jerusalem, he audited courses at a Conservative rabbinical school and participated in an intensive Jewish education program emphasizing experiential learning. This transformative period led him to a profound realization—his calling was in Jewish leadership. Committed to guiding others on their spiritual paths, he pursued formal rabbinic training.

Determined to fulfill this newfound mission, Ranon returned to the United States in 1998 and enrolled at the University of Judaism, now the American Jewish University, in Los Angeles. His studies in Jewish education and rabbinic ordination allowed him to deepen his knowledge while embracing a progressive approach to faith and community leadership. He excelled academically, earning a master's degree from the Fingerhut School of Education in 2000 and recognition for outstanding achievement in the field. His commitment to scholarship and leadership was further acknowledged when he was ordained as a rabbi in 2002, receiving accolades for academic excellence in Talmudic studies. Years later, in May 2022, he was honored with a Doctorate from a prestigious rabbinical institution, cementing his reputation as an influential figure in Jewish education and spiritual leadership.
